Anna and Scott Sadler of Surface Refinements are based in Scottsdale, Arizona. They specialize in artistic finishes for walls, ceilings, and large-scale art on canvas. Their portfolio consists of a multitude of finishes that range from contemporary in nature, organic, serene, and timeless to luxurious ultra-glamorous jewel box finishes.

“We feel so fortunate that our job is to create beauty and elegance for a living,” Anna shares. “It is definitely motivating to get up and out the door every day and face a blank space knowing something wonderful will result at the end.”

A recent project had them collaborating with designers Jen Lossing ASID of Artistic Abode Designs and Amanda Billings of Artifacts Interiors. They wanted the ceiling to be a major focal point upon entering the client’s home. “We embrace challenges that allow us to keep growing as artists, and collaborating with talented creative interior designers gives us that opportunity on a daily basis. Our motto is to say “yes” and figure it out later when we are presented with the sometimes “impossible”, Anna further shares.

A kintsugi-inspired design was discussed, and a sample (below right) was created.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with metallics, more often than not. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as a beautiful and respected aspect of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Here’s an example.

With massive picture windows overlooking the Sonoran desert, the color palette was chosen to reflect the beautiful nature that surrounds it.

“We used 3 gorgeous products from the Novacolor Italia line. The Animamundi, Africa, and Dune plasters all came together to create the background for the Kintsugi-inspired ceiling. All are incredible soft metallic plasters that trowel like a dream,” Anna says. “Everything in the product line is exceptional in quality. The products are versatile, and the color palettes are on trend.” Here’s the result!

For this project, Anna and Scott collaborated with fellow artist Carmen Lomax. “Our work is made more enjoyable when the opportunity presents itself to collaborate with other talented artists. The work site has added creative energy, lots of laughter and camaraderie!” Anna states.
